What year did the punk band The Clash form?

The story behind the answer

The Clash formed in London in 1976. The band emerged from the early British punk scene, bringing together guitarist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon, and vocalist Joe Strummer, who had previously performed with the pub-rock band the 101ers.

The Clash played their first concert on July 4, 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols at the Black Swan in Sheffield. Their early lineup also included guitarist Keith Levene and drummer Terry Chimes, although the membership changed frequently during the band’s first years.

Although The Clash began as a punk band, their music soon expanded to include reggae, ska, dub, funk, rockabilly, and other styles. Albums such as London Calling helped establish them as one of the most influential groups of the original British punk movement.

A common mix-up is confusing the band’s formation year with its debut album or first single. The Clash’s first album appeared in 1977, but the group itself was formed the previous year.
