The first season of 'Survivor' aired in 2000. Known retrospectively as Survivor: Borneo, it premiered on CBS on May 31, 2000, and concluded on August 23 of the same year.
The season placed 16 contestants on Pulau Tiga, an island in Malaysia's Borneo region, where they competed in challenges, formed alliances, and voted one another out. Richard Hatch won the season, defeating Kelly Wiglesworth in a 4–3 jury vote and becoming the show's first Sole Survivor.
A common mix-up is the distinction between filming and broadcasting: production took place from March 13 through April 20, 2000, but viewers first saw the series in late May. The season was originally promoted simply as Survivor; the title Survivor: Borneo was adopted later to distinguish it from subsequent seasons.
