“Right on Track” was released by the New York band Breakfast Club in 1987 on MCA Records. Written by Dan Gilroy and Stephen Bray and produced by Jimmy Iovine, the song became the group’s signature hit. It combines synthesizers, dance-pop rhythms, and new-wave influences typical of the period.
The single reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and also became a major dance hit. It came from the band’s self-titled 1987 album, their only studio album issued by MCA. The group received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist at the 30th Grammy Awards, held in 1988.
The Breakfast Club is also notable for its connection to Madonna. Madonna was a member of an early version of the group in the early 1980s, before leaving to pursue her solo career. She was not part of the lineup that recorded “Right on Track,” however. The title is sometimes written with inconsistent capitalization, but the year remains 1987.
