Georgia O'Keeffe made Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932.
The painting presents a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. O'Keeffe transformed an ordinary Southwestern plant into a monumental, sharply focused composition, a method that became central to her reputation as a modernist painter.
The work was painted during the period when O'Keeffe was increasingly connected with New Mexico, although the painting itself is not a straightforward landscape. Its scale and simplified forms show how she could turn a natural object into an almost abstract arrangement of curves, shadows, and contrasts.
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became especially famous after selling at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, including buyer's premium. That sale made it the most expensive painting by a female artist recorded at the time, a distinction later surpassed by other artists.
