What year did Fred Rogers die?

The story behind the answer

Fred Rogers died in 2003.

Fred McFeely Rogers, best known as Mister Rogers, died on February 27, 2003, at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was 74 years old. The cause of death was stomach cancer, which had been diagnosed several months earlier.

Rogers had retired from producing new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood in 2001, but he remained active afterward. He continued working with his production company, making appearances, studying religion and spirituality, and helping develop a children's media center at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He also served as grand marshal of the 2003 Rose Parade shortly before undergoing stomach surgery.

The year can be confused with 2001 because that was when regular production of the television series ended. Rogers' death came two years later, in 2003. His influence continued after his death through PBS broadcasts, books, documentaries, memorials, and later programs inspired by his approach to children's emotional and social development.
