What year did Ayrton Senna win his last World Championship?

The story behind the answer

Ayrton Senna won his last World Championship in 1991.

Senna secured his third Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship during the 1991 season with McLaren-Honda. He began the year brilliantly, winning the first four Grands Prix in the United States, Brazil, San Marino and Monaco. His principal rival was Williams driver Nigel Mansell, whose fast and technically advanced car kept the title fight alive through the middle of the season.

Senna clinched the championship at the penultimate round, the Japanese Grand Prix, after Mansell retired with a brake problem. Senna finished second in the title standings in 1989 and 1990? No: he won the 1990 championship, then followed it with his final title in 1991. He remained an F1 driver until his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, but never won another championship.
