What witch is central to 'The Dreams in the Witch House'?
Answer
Keziah Mason
Answer
Keziah Mason
Keziah Mason is the witch at the center of H. P. Lovecraft’s The Dreams in the Witch House. Her occult history connects the story’s decaying Arkham house to the Salem witch trials of 1692.
The protagonist, Walter Gilman, rents an attic room in the so-called Witch House while studying mathematics and folklore at Miskatonic University. He becomes fascinated by the room’s strange angles, which seem to form a route through higher-dimensional space. His dreams bring him into contact with Mason, her rat-bodied familiar Brown Jenkin and the cosmic entity Nyarlathotep.
Mason is said to have disappeared from a Salem jail after describing mysterious lines and curves that could lead through the walls of space. That detail links her witchcraft to the story’s mathematical and scientific imagery. Lovecraft wrote the tale in 1932, and Weird Tales published it in July 1933.
The other options are characters from different parts of the Mythos. Asenath Waite belongs to The Thing on the Doorstep, while Lavinia Whateley appears in The Dunwich Horror. Nug-Soth is a separate occult name, not the witch haunting the Witch House.
