Which Lovecraft story features the corpse-reviving scientist Herbert West?

The story behind the answer

“Which Lovecraft story features the corpse-reviving scientist Herbert West?” — “Herbert West-Reanimator.” The title character is a brilliant but amoral medical researcher who believes that death is a biological condition that can be reversed with a chemical reagent.

The story follows West and his unnamed narrator through a series of increasingly disturbing experiments. They begin by robbing graves, then work with freshly dead bodies and victims of disease. West’s subjects rarely return as rational human beings; many revive violently, with fragmented memories or animalistic behavior. His research eventually includes reanimating individual body parts and experimenting during World War I.

Lovecraft wrote the six-part story from 1921 to 1922, and it was serialized in Home Brew from February through July 1922. It was an early Lovecraft depiction of scientifically created zombies and also introduced Miskatonic University. The 1985 film Re-Animator was inspired by the story, but its comedy, gore, and characterization differ substantially from Lovecraft’s grim original.
