Answer
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
The title of Lovecraft's short horror novel first published posthumously in 1941 is The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
Lovecraft wrote the novel in early 1927 and set it in Providence, Rhode Island, his hometown. The story follows Charles Dexter Ward, a young man fascinated by his distant ancestor Joseph Curwen, an alleged wizard whose occult and alchemical experiments lead Ward toward a terrifying attempt at resurrection.
Lovecraft did not publish the work during his lifetime and reportedly disliked its ornate, antiquarian style. After his death, August Derleth and Donald Wandrei arranged its publication in Weird Tales in abridged form across the May and July 1941 issues. The first complete edition appeared in Arkham House's 1943 collection Beyond the Wall of Sleep.
A common mix-up is confusing this novel with The Colour Out of Space, which Lovecraft wrote immediately afterward but which is a short story, not a posthumously published novel. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is also sometimes called a novella because of its length, but reference works commonly describe it as a short horror novel.
