What widescreen film format did Quentin Tarantino use for The Hateful Eight?

The story behind the answer

Quentin Tarantino used Ultra Panavision 70 for The Hateful Eight.

The film was shot on 65 mm film with Ultra Panavision 70 lenses, producing an exceptionally wide 2.76:1 aspect ratio. Tarantino and cinematographer Robert Richardson used the format to emphasize the isolation of the Wyoming landscape and the confined interiors of Minnie’s Haberdashery.

The Hateful Eight was the first film shot in Ultra Panavision 70 in roughly 50 years. Its roadshow presentation used specially restored 70 mm projectors and included an overture and intermission, features associated with large-format theatrical presentations of earlier decades.

The format is not the same as IMAX or ordinary 70 mm photography. Ultra Panavision used anamorphic lenses to create a much wider image, while the film’s interiors also relied on carefully controlled camera movement and lighting to keep the large frame visually active.
