Kitana is an Edenian princess and a recurring fighter in the series. Her paired metal fans are central to her visual design and combat style, and many of her special moves involve throwing, opening, or striking with them. The fans distinguish her from other Edenian characters, particularly her longtime rival Mileena.

Kitana first appeared as a playable character in Mortal Kombat II, released in arcades in 1993. In that game, she was presented as an assassin serving Shao Kahn before turning against him after learning more about her past and his rule of Edenia.
