What was Visa’s original Bank of America credit-card name, launched in 1958?

The story behind the answer

Visa’s original Bank of America credit-card name, launched in 1958, was BankAmericard.

Bank of America introduced the card in Fresno, California, as an early general-purpose revolving-credit card. Unlike a store card, it could be used across participating merchants, and customers could carry a balance rather than paying the full amount immediately.

The BankAmericard system expanded through licensing and international partnerships. In 1976, the international network adopted the name Visa, creating a more neutral global brand that was not tied directly to Bank of America. Visa later became one of the world’s largest payment networks, connecting consumers, merchants, banks, and financial institutions.

A frequent mistake is calling BankAmericard the original name of the modern Visa company itself. It was the card and network brand that preceded Visa. Bank of America retained important historical ties, while the international organization developed into the independent Visa payment network known today.
