What was the traditional name of the queen associated with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon?
Answer
Amytis of Media
Answer
Amytis of Media
Amytis of Media was the traditional queen associated with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Later Greek and Roman writers connected the gardens with Nebuchadnezzar II, king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, and said they were built for his wife, Amytis of Media. The story presents the gardens as a royal attempt to recreate the green mountainous landscape of her homeland in the flat region around Babylon.
The identification is traditional rather than securely proven. Archaeologists have not found decisive remains of the gardens at Babylon, and the surviving Babylonian records do not clearly describe them. Some modern theories place the inspiration for the story elsewhere, including at Nineveh, but the classical account links Amytis with Babylon.
Amytis should not be confused with Artemisia II, the ruler associated with the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The two women belonged to different historical settings and regions.
