What was the Toronto Maple Leafs' home arena renamed in 2018?

The story behind the answer

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ home arena was renamed Scotiabank Arena in 2018. The building had previously been known as the Air Canada Centre, a name it used from its opening in 1999.

The arena is located on Bay Street in downtown Toronto and is also home to the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment announced a 20-year naming-rights agreement with Scotiabank, and the new name officially took effect on July 1, 2018.

The renaming did not mean the Maple Leafs moved to a new venue. They had already left Maple Leaf Gardens in 1999 and moved into the newly built arena, then called the Air Canada Centre. Maple Leaf Gardens remains an important part of the team’s history: the Leafs won 11 Stanley Cups there.

A common mix-up is confusing the 2018 name change with the team’s earlier move. Scotiabank Arena is the current name of the same downtown venue that first opened as the Air Canada Centre.
