What was the title of the stage musical based on Shrek that opened on Broadway in 2008?

The story behind the answer

The Broadway stage musical based on Shrek was titled Shrek the Musical.

Shrek the Musical adapts the story and characters of the first Shrek film while also drawing on the 1990 picture book Shrek! by William Steig. The production features music by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire.

The musical began Broadway previews in November 2008 and officially opened at the Broadway Theatre in December 2008. Brian d’Arcy James played Shrek, Sutton Foster played Princess Fiona, and Christopher Sieber played Lord Farquaad in the original Broadway cast.

The show received eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. It won one Tony, for Best Costume Design for a Musical. The Broadway production closed in January 2010, but licensed productions and a filmed stage version helped keep the musical in circulation.
