The 1980s McDonald’s advertising campaign featuring the moonwalking character was titled “Mac Tonight.”
Mac Tonight was a crescent-moon-headed character who wore sunglasses and sang a parody of Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife.” The campaign promoted McDonald’s evening business and gave the brand a distinctive nighttime identity.
The character first appeared in regional advertising in 1986 and became widely recognized through television commercials. His visual design was separate from the older McDonaldland cast, which had been aimed more directly at children.
Mac Tonight is sometimes remembered as a permanent McDonald’s mascot, but he was primarily an advertising campaign character. His association with evening dining was the central idea behind the campaign.
