J.R.R. Tolkien's unfinished sequel to The Lord of the Rings was titled The New Shadow.

Tolkien began the work after completing The Lord of the Rings, setting it during the reign of Aragorn's son, Eldarion. The surviving opening takes place in Gondor after Sauron's defeat, when the central threat is no longer an openly ruling Dark Lord but a new generation's attraction to secret societies and darker memories.

Tolkien abandoned the project after writing only a small amount. He felt that the story was becoming a political and psychological tale about discontent in a peaceful kingdom, rather than another mythic conflict on the scale of the earlier narrative. The fragment was later published in his posthumous writings.
