What was the title of J.R.R. Tolkien’s collection of letters written as Father Christmas?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s collection of letters written as Father Christmas is titled The Father Christmas Letters.

The book gathers letters Tolkien wrote to his children between 1920 and 1943. Each Christmas, he presented the children with a letter supposedly sent from Father Christmas at the North Pole. Tolkien also created drawings, invented characters, and developed stories about the North Polar Bear and other inhabitants of that imaginary world.

The letters were private family creations rather than works originally intended for commercial publication. They show Tolkien using language, calligraphy, illustration, and playful storytelling in an intimate setting outside his major legendarium.

The collection was edited and published after Tolkien’s death. It is sometimes grouped with his Middle-earth books, but its setting and characters belong to a separate Christmas fantasy. The volume remains an important record of Tolkien as a father and artist.
