John Lennon’s 1975 album of cover songs was titled Rock ’n’ Roll. It was his sixth and final solo studio album, built around songs from the late 1950s and early 1960s that had influenced him during his youth.

The project followed Mind Games and was partly shaped by a copyright dispute involving “Come Together.” Lennon had borrowed a line from Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me,” and an agreement with publisher Morris Levy required Lennon to record several songs from Levy’s catalogue. That obligation helped turn an oldies project into a full album of rock-and-roll standards.

Recording was unusually troubled. Lennon first worked with Phil Spector in Los Angeles in 1973, but the master tapes disappeared after the sessions and were not recovered until the following year. Lennon later completed the album in New York. It was released in February 1975, reached number 6 in both the United States and United Kingdom, and included his hit cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me.”
