What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s first published work of fiction?

The story behind the answer

The Pilgrim’s Regress was C.S. Lewis’s first published work of fiction.

Published in 1933, the book is an allegorical journey by a character named John through a landscape influenced by John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. Lewis wrote it after his return to Christian belief, and it presents philosophical and theological arguments through symbolic characters and encounters.

The subtitle, An Allegorical Apology for Christianity, Reason and Romanticism, signals the book’s mixture of religious defense, intellectual debate, and the longing Lewis called “joy.” Its style is more overtly argumentative and densely allusive than the later Narnia novels.

Dymer was published before The Pilgrim’s Regress, but it was a long narrative poem rather than Lewis’s first published work of fiction in the usual bibliographic classification. Out of the Silent Planet followed in 1938 as the first novel of the Space Trilogy.
