Answer
The Pilgrim’s Regress
C.S. Lewis’s first published novel, released in 1933, was The Pilgrim’s Regress.
Subtitled An Allegorical Apology for Christianity, Reason and Romanticism, the book follows John, a young man on a symbolic journey toward a distant goal. Its structure deliberately recalls John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, while its ideas reflect Lewis’s own movement from atheism toward Christian belief.
Lewis wrote the novel soon after becoming a Christian. The allegory includes figures and places representing philosophical positions, intellectual influences, and spiritual experiences. Lewis later acknowledged that some of its symbolism was too private or difficult for general readers to recognize.
The book is not part of the Chronicles of Narnia or the Space Trilogy. Those better-known fictional works appeared later: Out of the Silent Planet began the Space Trilogy in 1938, while The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe began the Narnia series in 1950.
