What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s first published book of poetry?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s first published book of poetry was Spirits in Bondage.

Spirits in Bondage was published in 1919, when Lewis was 20 years old. It appeared under the pseudonym Clive Hamilton, combining his first name with his mother’s maiden name. The collection reflects the influence of the First World War and includes poems concerned with suffering, confinement, nature, and spiritual uncertainty.

Lewis served in the British Army during the First World War and was wounded in France in 1918. The poems were published after that experience, although the collection is not simply a military memoir. Its tone differs markedly from the Christian apologetics and children’s fiction for which Lewis later became famous.

The book is often confused with Dymer, another early poetic work. Dymer was published in 1926 and used the same Clive Hamilton pseudonym, but Spirits in Bondage came first and is Lewis’s first published volume of poetry.
