What was the title of C.S. Lewis's 1961 memoir about grief?
Answer
A Grief Observed
Answer
A Grief Observed
A Grief Observed was C.S. Lewis's 1961 memoir about grief.
Lewis wrote the book after the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, from cancer in 1960. It presents his thoughts, anger, doubt, and emotional disorientation during bereavement. Rather than offering a polished theological argument, the book records the instability and pain of grief in a direct, personal voice.
The work was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk. Lewis used the pseudonym partly because he did not want readers to approach the book as a famous author's authoritative statement about suffering. The identity of the author became known later.
A Grief Observed is distinct from Surprised by Joy, Lewis's 1955 autobiography, which focuses on his intellectual and spiritual development. The grief memoir is also sometimes linked to Davidman's illness itself, but it was written after her death and centers on Lewis's bereavement.
