What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1961 book about mourning his wife?

The story behind the answer

A Grief Observed was C.S. Lewis’s 1961 book about mourning his wife.

The book records Lewis’s response to the death of Joy Davidman, who died of cancer in 1960. It was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk, partly because Lewis wanted readers to encounter the reflections without immediately treating them as an author’s public theological statement.

Written as a series of personal observations, the book explores anger, doubt, loneliness, memory, and the difficulty of reconciling suffering with faith. Its directness distinguishes it from Lewis’s more systematic apologetic works.

The title is sometimes confused with The Problem of Pain, which Lewis published in 1940 as a philosophical and theological discussion of suffering. A Grief Observed instead grows out of a specific personal loss and the aftermath of Davidman’s death.
