What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel featuring Orual?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel featuring Orual is Till We Have Faces.

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold was Lewis’s final completed novel. Published in 1956, it reworks the ancient myth of Cupid and Psyche from the viewpoint of Orual, a woman who becomes queen of the fictional kingdom of Glome. The change in narrator gives the story a psychological and philosophical focus.

The novel examines love, possessiveness, jealousy, faith, and the difficulty of seeing oneself clearly. Its title comes from the idea that people may hide behind identities or complaints until they confront the truth about themselves.

Although Lewis is often associated with Narnia, this book is aimed at an adult audience and is much darker in tone. It is sometimes overlooked beside his Christian apologetics and children’s fiction, but Lewis regarded it as one of his strongest literary achievements.
