What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel about Orual and the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s 1956 novel about Orual and the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche is Till We Have Faces.

Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold retells the story of Cupid and Psyche from the perspective of Orual, Psyche’s older sister. The novel explores love, jealousy, religious belief, self-knowledge, and the difficulty of seeing oneself honestly.

Lewis published the book in 1956, near the end of his fiction-writing career. It differs sharply in tone from the children’s Narnia books: its setting is a fictionalized ancient kingdom, and its narrator is an adult queen reflecting on painful events.

Readers sometimes mistake the title for one of Lewis’s explicitly Christian apologetic works. Although the novel contains religious and philosophical concerns, it is primarily a literary retelling of a classical myth.
