Perelandra is C.S. Lewis’s 1943 space novel featuring Elwin Ransom.
Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s Ransom Trilogy, also called the Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, travels to the planet Perelandra, which is identified with Venus. There he encounters a newly created world facing a moral and spiritual crisis.
The first book, Out of the Silent Planet, introduces Ransom and sends him to Mars, called Malacandra. The final book, That Hideous Strength, returns the action mainly to Earth. Because all three novels belong to the same sequence, their titles are sometimes mixed up by readers.
Lewis published Perelandra in 1943, during the Second World War. Like much of his fiction, it combines imaginative adventure with philosophical and theological questions. The unusual title is the fictional name of the planet rather than the name of a character or organization.
