Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
C.S. Lewis’s 1938 science-fiction novel set partly on Mars is Out of the Silent Planet. It is the first book in his Space Trilogy, also called the Ransom Trilogy.
The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is kidnapped and taken from Earth to the planet Malacandra. The novel uses “Malacandra” for Mars and presents a society very different from the technologically aggressive human world. Lewis combines planetary adventure with philosophical and theological questions about reason, morality, and humanity’s place in creation.
The two follow-up novels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Unlike the first two books, the third is set mainly on Earth and develops the trilogy’s conflict between scientific power and spiritual order.
Out of the Silent Planet is sometimes confused with Perelandra because both involve Ransom’s interplanetary journeys. Its publication in 1938 makes it the trilogy’s opening volume.
