Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
C.S. Lewis’s 1938 Christian science-fiction novel about Malacandra is Out of the Silent Planet.
The novel follows Elwin Ransom after he is kidnapped and transported from Earth to Malacandra, a planet that humans call Mars. There he encounters intelligent species and learns that Earth is regarded as a troubled or “silent” world within the wider cosmic order. The setting allows Lewis to explore ideas about language, morality, sin, and humanity’s place in creation.
Out of the Silent Planet was the first volume of the Space Trilogy. Perelandra followed in 1943, and That Hideous Strength completed the sequence in 1945. The books are connected by Ransom and by their philosophical concerns, but they are not retellings of biblical narratives.
The name Malacandra can be confused with the planet’s scientific identity, Mars. Malacandra is Lewis’s fictional name for Mars within the novel’s invented cosmology and vocabulary.
