What was the title of C.S. Lewis’s 1933 allegorical novel about a journey toward faith?

The story behind the answer

The Pilgrim’s Regress was C.S. Lewis’s 1933 allegorical novel about a journey toward faith. Its full title is The Pilgrim’s Regress: An Allegorical Apology for Christianity, Reason and Romanticism.

The book follows John, who leaves his home after seeing an ominous burden and travels through a landscape populated by figures representing ideas, philosophies, and cultural attitudes. Lewis modeled the work partly on John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, but his story reflects the intellectual debates and spiritual questions of the early twentieth century.

Lewis wrote the novel soon after returning to Christianity, and its complexity made it less accessible than his later popular works. The Great Divorce is another Lewis work involving a journey and supernatural imagery, but it was published in 1945 and has a different structure and purpose.
