What was the stage name of the Ramones' original drummer?

The story behind the answer

The Ramones’ original drummer used the stage name Tommy Ramone. Born Erdelyi Tamás in Budapest, Hungary, he later moved to the United States and became involved in New York’s emerging underground rock scene.

Tommy was a founding member of the Ramones and played on the band’s first three studio albums: Ramones, Leave Home, and Rocket to Russia. His drumming helped define the group’s fast, stripped-down sound, built around short songs, simple structures, and relentless momentum.

Although he was the band’s original drummer, Tommy Ramone eventually left the lineup in 1978. He was replaced by Marky Ramone, who became the group’s longest-serving drummer. Tommy continued working with the band as a producer, including on Road to Ruin.

The Ramones used shared surnames as part of their stage identities, even though the members were not related. That is why the original drummer’s stage name was Tommy Ramone, while the other founding members included Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, and Dee Dee Ramone.
