Answer
Jello Biafra
What was the stage name of Dead Kennedys singer Eric Boucher? His stage name was Jello Biafra.
Boucher adopted the name while forming Dead Kennedys in San Francisco in 1978. He briefly performed as “Occupant,” then settled on Jello Biafra, combining the American gelatin brand Jell-O with Biafra, the secessionist state associated with the Nigerian Civil War and a devastating famine.
The deliberately jarring name reflected his use of satire and political shock in Dead Kennedys’ music. As the band’s lead singer and lyricist, Biafra became known for rapid-fire delivery, dark humor and songs that attacked militarism, consumer culture and political hypocrisy.
He was not the band’s only songwriter or instrumental creator, and the other options are separate punk figures: Joe Strummer led the Clash, Stiv Bators fronted the Dead Boys and Lux Interior led the Cramps. After Dead Kennedys, Biafra continued as a spoken-word performer, activist and musician.
