What was the Pathfinder lander renamed after landing on Mars?
Answer
Carl Sagan Memorial Station
Answer
Carl Sagan Memorial Station
The Pathfinder lander was renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station after landing on Mars.
Mars Pathfinder touched down in Ares Vallis on July 4, 1997, carrying the Sojourner rover. The next day, NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin announced that the lander would honor astronomer and planetary scientist Carl Sagan, who had died in December 1996. The name recognized Sagan’s major role in popularizing planetary exploration and his contributions to NASA missions.
The name applied to the stationary lander, not to the small rover. Sojourner retained its own name, which honored abolitionist and civil-rights advocate Sojourner Truth. Together, the lander and rover formed one of NASA’s most influential Mars missions: Pathfinder demonstrated an airbag-based landing system and delivered the first successful wheeled rover to operate on another planet.
The mission returned thousands of images, weather observations, and chemical measurements of rocks and soil. “Bradbury Landing” is associated with the Curiosity rover, while Columbia Memorial Station is the name given to Spirit’s landing site. Neither was Pathfinder’s post-landing name.
