What was the original title of the BBC radio talks later revised as C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity?

The story behind the answer

Broadcast Talks was the original title of the first BBC radio talks later revised into C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity.

Lewis delivered the first series of talks during 1941, while Britain was engaged in the Second World War. The BBC broadcast them as short addresses intended for a general audience rather than an academic readership. Lewis used clear examples and everyday language to explain central Christian ideas.

The talks were revised and collected in book form as Broadcast Talks in 1942. Later editions combined that material with two further series, Christian Behaviour and Beyond Personality. The resulting volume was published as Mere Christianity in 1952.

Mere Christianity does not attempt to describe every difference among Christian denominations. Lewis’s purpose was to present what he regarded as the shared core of historic Christianity. Because the title became much more famous than the original broadcast title, readers sometimes assume the radio programs began under the name Mere Christianity.
