What was the original title of C.S. Lewis’s 1942 BBC broadcast talks?
Answer
Broadcast Talks
Answer
Broadcast Talks
C.S. Lewis’s 1942 BBC broadcast talks were originally titled Broadcast Talks.
Lewis delivered the talks during the Second World War for BBC radio. They were designed for a broad British audience and presented basic Christian ideas in clear, accessible language rather than in the style of an academic theological lecture.
The broadcasts were later revised and published in book form. The first printed collection appeared as Broadcast Talks in 1942, followed by Christian Behaviour in 1943 and Beyond Personality in 1944. These three sections were eventually combined and published as Mere Christianity in 1952.
Because the complete book is now much better known, readers sometimes call the wartime broadcasts Mere Christianity from the beginning. That is historically imprecise: Mere Christianity was the later collected title. The phrase itself refers to the common core of Christian belief shared across many denominations.
