What was the original publication year of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring was originally published in 1954.

George Allen & Unwin published the first volume of The Lord of the Rings in the United Kingdom on 29 July 1954. The novel was divided into three volumes because of paper shortages and the high cost of producing such a long work, not because Tolkien regarded it as a trilogy in the usual sense.

The Fellowship of the Ring follows Frodo Baggins after Bilbo leaves him the One Ring. Its narrative includes the formation of the Fellowship, the journey through Moria, and the breaking of the group at the end of the volume.

The Two Towers followed in 1954, while The Return of the King appeared in 1955. The work’s internal structure consists of six books plus appendices, despite the familiar three-volume publishing format.
