Which Tolkien family member edited and published The Silmarillion in 1977?
Answer
Christopher Tolkien
Answer
Christopher Tolkien
Christopher Tolkien edited and published The Silmarillion in 1977.
J.R.R. Tolkien left behind a huge body of mythology, notes, drafts, and revisions concerning the history of Arda. After his father’s death, Christopher Tolkien organized this material into a publishable form. The resulting book, The Silmarillion, appeared posthumously in 1977, edited by Christopher with assistance from fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay.
The book presents the creation of Eä, the account of the Valar, the awakening of the Elves, and the great tragedies of the First Age. It includes stories such as the rebellion of the Noldor, the wars against Morgoth, and the tales of Beren and Lúthien and Túrin Turambar.
The Silmarillion is not a conventional novel with one continuous narrative. Its mythic style and multiple versions reflect Tolkien’s long, unfinished work on the legendarium. Christopher’s editorial role was therefore substantial, and readers should distinguish this posthumous edited publication from books completed and published by J.R.R. Tolkien himself.
