What was the original Broadway opening date of Disney’s musical The Little Mermaid?

The story behind the answer

Disney’s musical The Little Mermaid officially opened on Broadway on December 6, 2007.

The stage production began previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in November 2007 before its official opening. It was adapted from Disney’s 1989 animated film and combined songs from the movie with new material by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. The Broadway production was directed by Francesca Zambello.

Sierra Boggess originated the role of Ariel in the Broadway production, while Sean Palmer played Prince Eric. The show used a mixture of stage mechanics, lighting, costumes, and choreography to represent an underwater setting.

The Broadway run ended in August 2009. Its opening date is different from the premiere dates of regional productions, national tours, and later international stagings, which is why identifying the Broadway production matters.
