The 2026 Wimbledon Championships were officially the 139th edition of the tournament. The number reflects Wimbledon’s continuous history from its first staging in 1877, while accounting for the years in which the Championships were not held.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is the third Grand Slam event on the annual calendar, following the Australian Open and French Open and preceding the US Open. The 2026 Championships were scheduled for 29 June through 12 July at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.
The edition number can cause confusion because Wimbledon was cancelled during both World Wars and again in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those missed tournaments do not count as editions. The 2026 tournament therefore follows the 2025 Championships as the 139th completed or scheduled edition, rather than simply being the 149th year since 1877.
Wimbledon is formally known as The Championships, Wimbledon. It is also often called the Wimbledon Championships or simply Wimbledon, all referring to the same major tournament.
