What was the name of Yves Saint Laurent's villa in Tangier, Morocco?
Answer
Villa Mabrouka
Answer
Villa Mabrouka
Yves Saint Laurent's villa in Tangier, Morocco, was called Villa Mabrouka.
Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought the property in 1997. Its name means “House of Luck” in Arabic, an apt title for a secluded residence perched above Tangier with views toward the Strait of Gibraltar.
The couple asked interior designer Jacques Grange to decorate the villa. Saint Laurent reportedly wanted the house to evoke an eccentric Englishman living in 1950s Tangier, with chintz fabrics and a different dominant color in each room. The result blended Moroccan details with British and modernist influences.
Villa Mabrouka was part of Saint Laurent and Bergé's wider Moroccan life. They first discovered Morocco in 1966 and later acquired Marrakech's Jardin Majorelle and Villa Oasis in 1980. After Saint Laurent's era, Villa Mabrouka was restored and became a small luxury hotel under British designer Jasper Conran.
