Quenya was J.R.R. Tolkien’s invented language for the high elves.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his lifelong interest in language construction. It draws much of its sound and structure from Finnish, while also reflecting his broader study of historical linguistics. Within the legendarium, Quenya is associated particularly with the Ñoldor and other groups of Elves with ancient connections to Valinor.
Sindarin is the most important neighboring language and the one more commonly spoken by Elves in many scenes of The Lord of the Rings. That distinction causes frequent confusion: Quenya is often described as an elevated or scholarly language, while Sindarin functions more widely in Middle-earth.
Tolkien created vocabulary, grammar and historical development for Quenya rather than merely inventing isolated words. Its internal history is one reason the language feels connected to the wider mythology.
