The White Star Line ship that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912 was RMS Titanic. The ocean liner struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic during the night of 14–15 April 1912 and sank early on 15 April.
Titanic was traveling from Southampton to New York on her maiden voyage. She carried more than 2,200 people, but the ship had lifeboat capacity for fewer than the total number aboard. The disaster killed more than 1,500 people and became one of the most famous maritime tragedies in history.
Titanic is often confused with her sister ships, RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. Olympic completed a long career, while Britannic served as a hospital ship and sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916. The wreck of Titanic was located in 1985 on the seabed roughly 3,800 metres below the surface.
