What was the name of the university where J.R.R. Tolkien studied and later taught?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
J.R.R. Tolkien studied and later taught at the University of Oxford. He entered Exeter College, Oxford, as an undergraduate and eventually became one of the university’s best-known professors.
Tolkien studied Classics before changing to the English Language and Literature course. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1915 and later returned to Oxford as an academic. His Oxford career included posts at Pembroke College and Merton College, as well as major professorships in Anglo-Saxon and English language and literature.
Oxford supplied Tolkien with both scholarly resources and a community of fellow writers. He was a member of the informal literary group known as the Inklings, which included C.S. Lewis. Tolkien wrote and discussed parts of his major works in and around Oxford, though Middle-earth is a fictional creation rather than a direct description of the university.
