What was the name of the Tolkien society founded in England in 1969?

The story behind the answer

The Tolkien Society was founded in England in 1969.

It began as a fan organization devoted to studying and celebrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s life and works. The society publishes Tolkien-related material, supports events and lectures, and promotes scholarly and popular discussion of his writing. Its activities include the annual Tolkien Society Seminar and Oxonmoot, a gathering held in Oxford.

The society should not be confused with the Inklings, the informal Oxford literary group that included Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Nor is it the same organization as the Mythopoeic Society, which began in the United States. The Tolkien Society’s formation came during the growing international interest in Tolkien’s books in the late 1960s.
