What was the name of the sword Bilbo gave to Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories?

The story behind the answer

Sting was the sword Bilbo gave to Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories.

Bilbo found Sting in the troll hoard during the events of The Hobbit, alongside the swords Glamdring and Orcrist. Although small compared with weapons made for men, elves, or dwarves, Sting was an effective blade for a hobbit. Its blue glow warned of nearby orcs and became one of its most recognizable features.

Bilbo carried Sting during his journey to the Lonely Mountain and later passed it to Frodo. Frodo used it during the quest to destroy the One Ring, including in encounters with giant spiders and orcs. The sword’s name is particularly fitting because of its short size and sharpness.

Sting is distinct from Glamdring, the sword carried by Gandalf, and Orcrist, the blade associated with Thorin Oakenshield. Andúril is Aragorn’s reforged sword, so it belongs to a different character and storyline.
