What was the name of the ship that carried Eärendil to the heavens in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology?

The story behind the answer

Vingilótë was the ship that carried Eärendil on his voyage to the heavens.

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, Eärendil is the mariner who sails west seeking the aid of the Valar against Morgoth. His ship is named Vingilótë, a Quenya name commonly translated as “Foam-flower.” Eärendil reaches Aman with Elwing, who carries one of the Silmarils, and he pleads for help on behalf of both Elves and Men.

After the Valar answer his plea, Eärendil becomes a figure associated with the evening star. The Silmaril is set upon his brow, and he sails the heavens in Vingilótë. The light of Eärendil’s star later becomes an important symbol of hope, including the light captured in Galadriel’s phial and given to Frodo.

The ship’s name is sometimes written Vingilot or Wingelot in different linguistic forms and editorial contexts. It should not be confused with Alcarondas, the great ship of Númenórean king Ar-Pharazôn, or with the jewel called the Nauglamír.
