What was the name of the school society J.R.R. Tolkien helped form at King Edward’s School?

The story behind the answer

The school society J.R.R. Tolkien helped form was the Tea Club and Barrovian Society.

The Tea Club and Barrovian Society, commonly abbreviated as T.C.B.S., grew from Tolkien’s friendships at King Edward’s School in Birmingham. Its members shared literary, artistic, and intellectual interests, and they met to discuss ideas and encourage one another’s creative work.

The group included Tolkien’s close friends Christopher Wiseman, Robert Gilson, and Geoffrey Bache Smith. Their relationships remained important after school, although the First World War profoundly affected the group: Gilson and Smith were killed in 1916, while Tolkien and Wiseman survived.

The T.C.B.S. is often confused with the Inklings, the later Oxford literary discussion group associated with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The two groups were separated by time, place, and membership. The T.C.B.S. belongs to Tolkien’s school years, while the Inklings met mainly in Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s.
