What was the name of the school in Aarau that Albert Einstein attended?

The school in Aarau that Albert Einstein attended was Kantonsschule Aarau. Einstein moved to Aarau in 1895 after leaving the Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich and failing the general portion of the entrance examination for Zurich Polytechnic, later known as ETH Zurich.

The Aarau school offered a more liberal educational atmosphere than Einstein’s previous school. He lived with the family of Jost Winteler, the school’s headmaster, and completed his secondary education there. Einstein graduated in 1896 with the qualification needed to enter Zurich Polytechnic.

The institution is now generally known in English as Old Cantonal School Aarau and in German as Alte Kantonsschule Aarau. It is sometimes described more broadly as the Argovian cantonal school, which explains why different biographies use slightly different English names. It should not be confused with ETH Zurich: ETH was the higher-education institution Einstein entered after finishing school in Aarau.
