What was the name of the restaurant where nachos were first served?
Answer
Victory Club
Answer
Victory Club
Nachos were first served at the Victory Club restaurant in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico.
In 1943, maître d’ Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya worked at the Victory Club, a restaurant near the U.S.–Mexico border. One evening, a group of American military officers’ wives arrived, but the cook was unavailable. Anaya went into the kitchen and assembled a quick snack using fried tortilla pieces, melted cheese, and sliced jalapeños.
The guests enjoyed the creation and asked for its name. Anaya called it “Nacho’s Special,” a name connected to his nickname. The restaurant’s owner later placed the dish on the menu as “Nacho’s Especiales,” helping establish the name that eventually became simply “nachos.”
The Victory Club is sometimes confused with El Moderno because Anaya later worked there, and some accounts connect the continuing original-style recipe with that restaurant. However, the widely cited first-serving location is the Victory Club. Anaya later opened his own restaurant, Nacho’s Restaurant, in Piedras Negras.
