Henry Every commanded a captured ship renamed Fancy.
Every’s crew originally sailed on the English privateer Charles II. After taking control of the vessel in 1694, they renamed it Fancy. The new name reflected the ship’s changed status as a pirate vessel rather than a legally commissioned privateer.
Fancy became famous because Every used it in the 1695 attack on the Mughal treasure ship Ganj-i-Sawai. That raid produced a huge prize and made Every one of the most notorious pirates of the late seventeenth century.
The ship’s name can be confused with Royal Fortune, a name used by several pirate captains, especially Bartholomew Roberts. Every’s later movements are uncertain, and Fancy itself disappears from the historical record after the crew divided their loot and sought to escape prosecution.
